Hypnotherapy and Cancer: How Hypnosis Could Help on Your Journey
A cancer diagnosis brings intense and overwhelming emotions. Fear, anxiety, depression, and worry are normal and completely understandable reactions.
As well as the shock of the diagnosis, fears and phobias around masks, needles, and being put into scanners might arise.
Then there’s the side effects associated with cancer treatments. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy cause a whole host of unpleasant side effects like nausea, fatigue, vertigo, hot flushes, eating issues, sleeping problems, and pain.
Getting a cancer diagnosis can be a very tough physical and psychological battle. Hypnotherapy is an evidence-based treatment that can help you, wherever you are on your cancer journey.
How hypnotherapy could help you on your cancer Journey
Hypnotherapy can NOT treat or cure cancer, but it can help in so many other ways.
- It can help you feel in control when everything feels like it’s out of control.
- Your therapist can suggest coping mechanisms for dealing with symptoms and treatments.
- It provides a sense of comfort and it can improve your quality of life.
Hypnotherapy and cancer patients: what the evidence says
If you have cancer, hypnotherapy can be an effective mode of treatment to use alongside your medical treatments.
Sharma (2017) carried out a literature review of 55 research papers which looked at the clinic benefits of using hypnotherapy with cancer patients. It concluded that it appeared to benefit cancer patients, both physically and psychologically.
Neron and Stephenson (2007) found evidence that clinical hypnosis reduced symptoms like pain and anxiety in cancer patients.
Hypnotherapy is an effective complementary therapy
You might think that a treatment like hypnotherapy would not be accepted by the medical profession, but on the contrary, some doctors are trained hypnotherapists and they use hypnosis in addition to conventional treatments.
